Demonstrator's Profiles

Barbara lives and works in Peterborough as a freelance flower arranger

In 1996 she joined Peterborough Floral Decoration Society and spent many years on the committee, including two terms as chairman

In 2006 Barbara qualified as a NAFAS Area Demonstrator, and enjoys sharing her love for flowers and garden foliage. Sometimes she uses her favourite flower – the Daffodil, and on special occasions cuts a few of “Barbara’s Passion” which was named for her by her husband in 2012. She says this celebrates her passion for Daffodils, which she has had since she was a child

Barbara is a keen competitor, and enjoys the challenge of designing exhibits. She has competed at Club, Group, Area and National levels, and most recently, represented her Area at the NAFAS Designer of The Year Competition at Blackpool 2015. She also arranged flowers in Westminster Abbey in 2010 to represent her Area at the Commonwealth Service

Barbara always enjoys being involved in Flower Festivals, and has exhibited in Cathedrals at Ely, Lincoln, Norwich and Bury St Edmunds. She is a Member of the Flower Guild for Peterborough Cathedral, where she leads a team of flower arrangers

First and Best in Show RHS Wisley, Awards at Area and international WAFA Shows

I enjoy everything floral and am happiest communicating my joy of flowers by teaching, speaking, demonstrating or competing and simply encouraging others to join in and ‘have a go’.   I draw inspiration from the things I love doing, gardening, drawing, painting and walking anywhere in East Anglia.

I discovered Flower Arranging and NAFAS late in life. Having joined Dereham and District Flower Club in 1997.  In 2000 l obtained a City and Guilds qualification in Contemporary Floral Design. In 2010 after voluntary redundancy from the day job, I took the opportunity to train as an Area Demonstrator and passed my test in October that year.

My demonstrations are based around my love of the Theatre, Musicals and Sport!  With the title ‘That’s Entertainment’ I am already up to Act IV for one club with my 4th visit to them.  When asked back for the 5th time l had to think of another title so now have ‘Encore the Autograph Collection’ added to my list of titles.  My demonstrations are mainly traditional arrangements with the emphasis on entertaining the audiences with stories of my many life experiences.

I feel truly privileged to have discovered NAFAS and flowers as l thoroughly enjoy visiting all the clubs in our area.  My life has been enriched by the many friends l have made through our shared love of flowers

I have been a member of NAFAS since 1997and I am currently Chairman of Costessey Flower Club in Norfolk, I became an area demonstrator in 2007. This had led to me attending many NAFAS occasions – arranging flowers at flower festivals, competitions, demonstrations and Westminster Abbey, I enjoy tutoring workshops to encourage arrangers to enjoy flowers and, as a keen gardener, wonderful plant material. Photography is a passion, and I have had the privilege of having designs featured in the flower arranger magazine. At the present time I am the area demonstrators representative which leads to a full and varied NAFAS life!

I am passionate about watercolour painting along with patchwork and quilting, so between those, and my all-time love of all things floral, surprisingly enough, my time is fully occupied, meaning the housework barely gets a look in.

All things floral is not only arranging the blooms, but designing and making containers, adapting and recycling materials for mechanics, accessories and generally "playing", with ideas and new found items.
